CARYVILLE, TN (WLAF) – A green Mazda car was a blur to the eye though its speed was clearly showing up on radar in the 40 mph zone. At 12:30am Thursday, Caryville Police Office James Coffey was running stationary radar near the entrance to Cove Lake State Park.

After seeing the radar allegedly reading 100 miles per hour, Coffey pursued the Mazda as blue lights and siren were activated. The speeding car continued toward Highway 116 and stopped at the traffic light near the Waffle House, according to the report from Caryville Police.

When Coffey spoke with the driver, Devan Oglesby, he said he was trying to catch up to his girlfriend being the reason for the reckless driving, according to the police report.

Coffey’s patrol car was positioned where it was facing oncoming southwest bound traffic and clocked Oglesby’s Mazda head on.

Ogelsby, 19, of Knoxville, was charged with reckless driving, speeding and failure to exercise due care. The jail records indicate that Oglesby came before the judge Thursday morning and was released. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 08/25/2023-6AM)
