JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF) – Your Cougars baseball squad, searching for its first win of the season, stepped foot on the diamond at Brown-Archer Field on Thursday evening to take on the Jellico Blue Devils from North Campbell County.

The Blue Devils coasted to a 7-1 lead heading into the Cougar half of the fifth inning. The Orange-and-Blue put together a solid inning, thanks in large part to a Rylan Rice two-run double. Caden Idles also knocked in a run to cut the Blue Devil lead to 7-4 after five.

Eli Lawson, who came in to relieve Landon Notaro, only allowed one Blue Devil to cross home plate from the fourth inning onward.

Rylan Rice, just as he did in the fifth inning, ripped another two-run double in the sixth.

To begin the Cougar seventh inning, Campbell trailed Jellico 8-6. After Tyler Cook reached base on an error, Jake Lawson stepped to the plate as the game tying run, hoping to keep the Cougar rally alive.

Lawson, after sending a chopper up the middle, darted to first base and appeared to beat the throw by a step or two. The field umpire saw it differently though, calling Lawson out. Much to the dismay of everyone wearing orange-and-blue, the Cougar rally was hampered, then ended a couple batters later.

Campbell, after falling to Jellico, drops to 0 and 13 on the year, still looking for its first victory.

The Cougars get that chance Friday night at Brown-Archer Field against Fulton. Jake Monday and Mike Miller are on the call for WLAF beginning at 6 pm. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 03/29/2024-6AM)
