LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – A phone scam is currently circulating, with scammers claiming to be from Medicare in an attempt to obtain personal information. These fraudulent callers will claim they are going to send a new Medicare card. The scammer continues to ask for sensitive information such as a mother’s maiden name, the last four digits of a Social Security number, or even the name of the victim’s bank. To avoid falling prey to this scam, it is important to hang up and refrain from providing any personal information.

Note that Medicare’s authentic phone number is 1-800-MEDICARE or 1-800-633-4227. Anyone receiving a suspicious call claiming to be from Medicare, should verify the caller’s identity by using this phone number before sharing any personal information.
