JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF) – Morgan Gray is blazing a trail for her family. “There’s no history of anyone playing golf in our family,” said Gray’s parents, James and Angelia on Wednesday before Morgan signed to play golf at Maryville College

Until 5th grade, Morgan had not had any coaching. “Jody Hatmaker was her first coach, and he improved her from the git-go,” said Angelia. That foundation along with Morgan’s work ethic puts her in a special class.

“To watch what she’s done, she works so hard, and it’s that hard work she does on her own that no one else sees,” said her Campbell High Coach Michael Cain. It’s been her work on improving her swing speed and conditioning that’s gotten her here (signing college scholarship papers), Cain said.

Morgan’s parents are excited she’s headed to play college golf, and he is very proud of her. “I’m looking forward to where she goes with it,” said Angelia.

CCHS Director of Athletics Matt Price played football at Maryville College. As he addressed those on hand for Morgan’s signing, he said “I’m partial to my school, and Maryville is fortunate to have you.” “You’ll represent Campbell County High School very well,” said Price.

CCHS teammates joined Morgan Gray as she signed scholarship papers with Maryville College on Wednesday.

“You (Morgan) can leave a bad shot behind you, and I love that about you,” said Cain. He called her a joy to coach.

Morgan, who stands five-feet nine-inches tall, is not only a worker when it comes to her golf game, she also has a job at the golf course. “For the past four years, she’s worked (and played) at the Greens at Deerfield,” said Morgan’s mom.

The trailblazer for the Gray family has no shortage of people happy about her collegiate career. “I’m as happy as can be, second to your parents,” said Cain. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 04/04/2022-6AM)
