Campbell County Commissioner Mike Douglas, son of the late Carl Douglas, and Campbell County Road Superintendent unveil the sign in Carl’s honor and memory. The sign is located on Stinking Creek Road near the new Stanfield Church of God property.

STINKING CREEK, TN (WLAF) – An impressive sized crowd gathered along Stinking Creek Road around 10am Tuesday morning for a very special dedication. The section of road that runs in front of the new Stanfield Church of God property was dedicated in memory and in honor of long time Campbell County public servant Carl Douglas. Related story.

It was in September of 2019 when Fifth District County Commissioner Carl Douglas and others were on hand for the official dedication of the just resurfaced Stinking Creek Road. Here, a couple of years later, many of the same family members, friends and local leaders were in attendance as a sign dedicating the straight-of-way stretch of highway in Douglas’ name. Douglas passed away last October.

“This is a really big day. It brings tears to my eyes to see this great showing of people here for Carl, said Campbell County Road Superintendent Ron Dilbeck. He went on to say “Carl is the reason why we’re here, here to honor Carl.”

Fifth District County Commissioner Ralph Davis described how anxious the entire county commission was to vote on this honor for Douglas. “We had a motion, and before we could get a second, shouts of let’s make this unanimous echoed in the courtroom,” said Davis. Related story.

Bishop Delmus Bruce offered up the prayer of dedication. Bruce was Douglas’ pastor for nearly 50 years. “Carl was a very special person from a special family. He served his country and his county honorably and loved people. He helped people and never looked for anything in return,” said the pastor of Stanfield Church of God.

“It’s wonderful (the dedication). Carl was a good brother, and he would be tickled to death about this,” said Roy Douglas.

With Mike Douglas to the left as the US Flag waves on the ladder truck from the La Follette Fire Department, Ron Dilbeck proudly takes another look at the new sign honoring and remembering Carl Douglas.

Dilbeck pointed out the the impressive sign was created locally. “The folks who did this would not take any pay or recognition,” he added.

Bishop Bruce fittingly closed the ceremony by saying, “The legacy Carl left behind was a part of the construction of this road.” (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 10/27/2021-6AM)
