Lawrence John Proffitt, Sr., age 89, of Jellico, Tennessee passed away Friday morning, July 23, 2021 at his home, surrounded by his family.

Lawrence was born on December 1, 1931 to the late Willie Oscar Proffitt, Sr. and Anna Mae (Corli) Proffitt in Fonde, Kentucky.

He retired from the United States Air Force after proudly serving our country for more than 20 years.  His time in the Air Force includes service during both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He was a member of the Newcomb Church of God of the Mountain Assembly.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Lawrence John “Larry” Proffitt, Jr., and infant, Warren Jeffery Proffitt; one grandson, Warren Cusick; three brothers, Wilbur Proffitt, Joe Proffitt and Andy Proffitt; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Clarence King and Eva (Mefford) King.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jean (King) Proffitt, of Jellico; four children; Cynthia Diane Proffitt, of Jellico, Vera Lynn (Proffitt) White, of Knoxville, TN, Stuart Anthony Proffitt, and wife, Sara, of Jellico, and Lee Ellen (Proffitt) Prater, of Knoxville, TN; 16grandchildren, Shaun Russell, Sonny Russell, Shane Cobb, Cameron Wilder,Dominic Proffitt, Chelsea Proffitt, Tony Proffitt, Adrienne Proffitt, Wesley Proffitt, Brianna Proffitt, Ethan Proffitt, Luke Barton, Douglas Walden, Anthony Walden, Danielle Walden, and Cynthia Walden.

He is also survived by 21 great-grandchildren, Harley Cusick, MariahDurbin, Kyle Bullock, Kaydee Russell, Konnor Russell, Ryler Dodson, AllySiler, Camron Mink, Waylon Wilder, Channing Proffitt, Colby Lawson, CadenLawson, Griffin Proffitt, Dawson Proffitt, Michael Creech, Savannah Owens,Madison Daniel, Raigan Proffitt, Jordan Bowlin, Chandler Walden, and IsaacHuddleston; one great-great grandchild, Josephine Annalise Silcox; onebrother, Willie Proffitt, and wife, Frances (Sowders) Proffitt; one sister,Gracie (Proffitt) Dunagen, and husband, Leamon; special friend, Don Donley;numerous nephews and nieces, and great-nephews and great-nieces, and a hostof friends, neighbors, and other relatives to mourn his passing.

The family will receive friends for visitation on Tuesday evening, July 27,2021 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Cox & Son Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral services will immediately follow on Tuesday evening, July 27, 2021at 8:00 p.m. at the Cox & Son Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Randy Bargo and Bro. Luke Barton officiating.

Special singing will be provided by Mr. Reed Elliotte.

Interment will follow on Wednesday afternoon, July 28, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. in the Jellico Cemetery.
Military Graveside Honors will be provided by the Jellico Honor Guard.

Pallbearers will be Stuart Proffitt, Shane Cobb, Cameron Wilder, Dominic Proffitt, Tony Proffitt, Wesley Proffitt, Darrel Griffith, and Paul Morgan.

Cox & Son Funeral Home of Jellico is in charge of all arrangements.
