CARYVILLE, TN (WLAF) – Caryville Police pulled over a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche around 2:30 am Friday on I-75 after the call of a reckless driver.

Once Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Jacob Wiser pulled up to the scene, the truck fled, according to the trooper’s report. The two Caryville officers began pursuing with Wiser assisting.

Wiser said speeds became excessive as the pursuit made its way south on I-75 out of Campbell County. The driver of the fleeing pick-up truck, 31-year- old Donald Childress of Clinton, moved in and out of different lanes in a deliberate manner with no concern for others, according to Wiser’s report.

As all units traveled into Knox County, the CPD officers requested that the THP take over as the primary in the pursuit. Trooper Carrie Hagen deployed a spike strip at Mile Marker 117, the Racoon Valley Exit, prompting Childress’ pick-up to soon begin decreasing speed. It came to a stop around southbound MM 116.

Childress was taken into custody and transported to the Campbell County Jail at Jacksboro. Based on the jail’s intake press release, Childress had a top speed of 127 miles per hour. Wiser listed Childress’ charges in his report as evading arrest, driving while in possession of Methamphetamine, simple possession schedule VI, unlawful drug paraphernalia, open container law, driving under the influence (DUI), reckless endangerment, no driver license carried and financial law violation.

Childress was released from jail just before 6:30 pm Friday evening on a $65,000 secured bond. He is scheduled to appear in Campbell County General Sessions Court Thursday morning. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 03/23/2021-6AM)
