JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF) – Prep work for a road detour, bridge removal and the relocation of a water main on Towe String Road began Tuesday morning. There will be a partial closure of TSR at the bridge from Fri., March 12, at noon through Mon., March 15, at noon.
The bridge, built around 1960, that connects Rogers Group properties will be taken out this weekend. Campbell County Road Superintendent Ron Dilbeck explains that the bridge will be razed and filled in with rock and other materials. It’ll then be paved and ready for traffic.
LUB started working Tuesday on the east side main water line that goes across the bridge getting ready for the work that begins on Friday to collapse the old bridge and fill the space. This water line feeds all the way to Pinecrest carrying about 250,000 gallons of water a day with about 150 pounds of pressure. Yesterday, LUB crews installed valves to control the flow during bridge work. The hope is to have everything completed by Sunday evening.
Towe String Road carries more than 3,000 vehicles a day, according to Campbell County Road Superintendent Ron Dilbeck. That’s one of the reasons for filling in rather than replacing the bridge. “It’ll save more than $300,000 and keep from having the road down to one lane for six months or longer to construct a new bridge,” said Dilbeck.
This project is 100 percent funded by the Tennessee Department of Transportation. The cost of the project is expected to come in well under $200,000.
The closure will be from Memorial Drive to River Road. Local traffic will have access. Anyone heading from the four lane to the county convenience center, Hope and Stand Church, Jacksboro Metals or Indian River Marina “needs to use the River Road side of Towe String” Dilbeck noted.
The Campbell County Highway Department, Twin K Construction and LUB will be working around the clock to repair the bridge located near the Rogers Group asphalt plant.
Detour signs will be posted. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 03/10/2021-6AM-PHOTOS COURTESY OF WLAF’S CHARLIE HUTSON)
