Through Friday morning, Campbell County is likely to receive upwards of two-inches of rain

CAMPBELL COUNTY, TN. (WLAF)- As the snow melts and rain moves in, a chance of flooding is in the forecast. On Wednesday night and Thursday, there is a 100 percent chance of rain in the weather forecast with wet weather predicted for the rest of the week.

While driving in rain often can’t be avoided, there a few tips to follow for a safer drive.

Driving in heavy rain

  • Drive slowly
  • Turn the headlights on and use fog lights. When visibility improves, turn fog lights off.
  • It takes longer to stop in wet conditions; double the space with the car in front.
  • Ease off the accelerator and slow down gradually if the car begins to aquaplane.
  • If a break down occurs do not open the hood. Electronics exposed to rain can make it harder to start the engine.

Don’t drive through standing water

  • It takes less than a foot of moving water to sweep a car off the road.
  • Attempting to drive through deep water also may stall the engine. If the engine stalls do not try to restart- this can damage the engine. Take a different route if possible. If there is a barricade- don’t drive past it.

Driving through deep water (when there is no other option)

  • Try to estimate the depth of the water.
  • Drive deliberately and steadily through the water.
  • Don’t use the phone unless reporting an emergency.
  • Watch for items moving in the water. They can impede the path or trap a car.
  • If there is a downed electrical line in the water- do not drive through it.
  • Dry the brakes by pressing gently on the brake pedal with left foot while retaining the speed of the vehicle.
  • If the car becomes trapped, immediately abandon it.
  • Call 911 if the situation worsens.
