The Juneteenth National Independence Day Act designated June 19 as a federal holiday on June 17, 2021. Juneteenth celebrates the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. On June 19, 1865, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, those still enslaved in Galveston, Texas, finally received word they were free. As newly recognized citizens, Black Americans across the Nation began to commemorate the day, also known as Freedom or Emancipation Day, a tradition honored today.
