New Cougar Football Coach Mark Pemberton has worked his plan to 250 career wins, so far
JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF) – Campbell Head Football Coach Mark Pemberton has ridden playing great defense, running the ball, controlling the clock, and limiting possessions to 250 wins. The veteran coach looks to keep riding along that winning trail on Reynolds Field.
The Rockwood native is excited to be here, and he is pleased to say the roster numbers continue to grow. “We’re looking at 52 to 55 players on the roster right now with 35 to 40 incoming freshmen to add,” said Pemberton. The new coach visited with the eighth graders at each middle school last Thursday.

Mark Pemberton, Campbell’s new football coach, quarterbacked Rockwood to the state championship as a sophomore in 1976.
During the eight days of spring practice, which begin tomorrow, the Cougars will be going strong on fundamentals. “Our off season weight training is coming along, and that’s very important. However, consistency is the main thing to being successful,” said Coach Pemberton. The Cougars will play a power offense and a 3-4 defense.
Pemberton’s coaching staff is comprised of familiar faces. His coaches were either former teammates, played for and/or coached with him. “It’ll be like putting on a familiar glove,” said Pemberton. Taylor Ownbey is the defensive coordinator while Mark Romero coaches both lines. Outside linebackers will be coached by Bradley Goodwin and Pemberton’s former Tennessee Tech teammate Mark Proffitt is in charge of the running backs. Proffitt serves as a volunteer coach. Additional assistant coaches are forthcoming
Quick turn-a-rounds have been a calling card for Pemberton. Rhea County was 2 & 8 the season before Pemberton arrived and went 10 & 2 in his first year, 2013.
Along Coach Pemberton’s successful career, his teams have had 19 seasons of nine plus wins, and he currently ranks third in wins among active Tennessee high school football coaches. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 05/06/2024-6AM)
