Not wearing a seatbelt alerted officer
LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF)- LaFollette Police Officer Joe Hicks saw a white Saturn traveling west on Central Avenue on June 27 around 4:30 pm. Hicks noticed that the driver was not wearing his seatbelt. As Officer Hicks approached the vehicle preparing to stop it, the driver changed lanes onto the shoulder without using a turn signal and traveled the shoulder until turning into the Red Roof Market, according to a report from the LaFollette Police Department.
Officer Hicks stopped the vehicle and asked the driver for his driver’s license, registration and proof of insurance. The driver reported that he did not have a driver’s license or insurance, though he did provide his ID and identified himself as Johnathan Harmon. When Patrolman Hicks ran Harmon’s ID, he learned through dispatch his license was revoked with two priors.
Harmon was asked to step out of the vehicle, and Officer Hicks then asked if there was anything illegal in the vehicle, and Harmon replied not that he knew of. Officer Hicks then asked Harmon if he could search his vehicle, and Hicks said he could if he wanted to. Harmon was detained while the patrolman could search the vehicle. During the search, Officer Hicks located a half-smoked Marijuana cigarette in the center console inside an empty cigarette pack, as well as a hypodermic syringe in the passenger side door.
