LAFOLLETTE, TN. (WLAF)-We’ve all had that teacher who inspired us or helped in some way. That’s why WLAF and Eagle Tire Pros salute one of our hard working educators with a weekly feature. Teachers make a difference in their students lives each and every day. For many students, having a teacher who cares and goes that extra mile can be the difference in a successful education and graduation.
This week’s featured teacher is Melinda Riggs. She teaches eighth grade science at Jacksboro Middle School.

Riggs has lived in Campbell County all her life. She studied biology at Western Governors University.
“Following that, I pursued a Master’s in the Art of Teaching at Tusculum University, which deepened my understanding of education and teaching methodologies,†Riggs said.
Outside of the classroom, she enjoys “traveling and exploring new places.â€
“I also cherish spending time with my family, my daughters, Jessa and Autumn, and my grandson, Kade. You can usually find me with one of them if not all three. These moments with my loved ones bring immense joy and balance to my life,†Riggs said.
She has “been in the education field for 19 years†and started as an assistant at Valley View before moving to Jacksboro Middle School in 2012.
“I am currently in my third year as a classroom teacher. I teach 8th grade science at Jacksboro Middle School, where I am passionate about engaging students in the wonders of science and encouraging them to think critically about the world around them,†Riggs said.

It was her “deep passion for being in a position to help children, whether academically or personally†that inspired her to follow a career path in education.
“I believe in the power of education to transform lives and provide support where it is needed most. I also wanted my daughters to see that nothing is impossible and with hard work and determination anything can be achieved. Over the years, I have been inspired by many past and current educators and administrators, each leaving a unique mark on my journey. Their dedication and commitment to their students motivated me to pursue a path where I can make a difference,†Riggs said.
Her favorite part of the job is the “connections she forms with her students and knowing that she has played a part in their lives.â€
“There is something incredibly rewarding about seeing students grow, learn, and succeed, and realizing that I have been a part of that journey. These relationships are what make teaching so fulfilling for me. Overall, I am a dedicated educator who believes in lifelong learning, exploration, and the importance of family,†Riggs said.
