It’s a two way success story; Shriners who peddle papers and travelers who donate for a paper

Shriner Paul Broyles and other Campbell County Shriners were out in full force on Friday and Saturday.

LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – There they were. It was sunny, hot and humid. Shriners were stationed on each side of the four lane standing on that hot pavement peddling papers out in front of Woodson’s Mall. For the better part of Friday and Saturday, members of the Campbell County Shriners Club, many in those funny little hats, were taking donations in exchange for a copy of The Shriners News. Those critical donations help the Shriners continue serving the children of our community.

A former co-worker at one of my television stops, Herb, was born with birth defects most notably a missing leg from the knee down. However, thanks to the Shriners Hospital at Lexington, and a prosthetic leg, he has had a productive and enjoyable life. Herb was the starting center on his high school football team, a state championship team, by the way, and he also played on the baseball team and was on the wrestling team.

Every time the Shriners were out with any kind of fundraiser, especially the paper drive, Herb would give them all the money he had on him at the time. He would share his story of the life changing events the Shriners made for him. In fact, he named his son Mason in honor of the Shriners.

On Friday morning, when I drove up to the Shriners in front of the mall, I thought of my friend Herb. When I opened my wallet, there was just one bill, a fifty. I told Paul Broyles, the Shriner, that all I had was this 50, which is rare for me, and I told him, you’re getting it.

U-S Navy Veteran and Shriner Leroy Morgan was on the four lane again Saturday.

Thank you for your friendship and the great example you set for me, Herb.

Thanks to our Campbell County Shriners for making us so proud for all they do for the children of our community, and another thanks to all those of you who donate making all this possible.

A NOTE FROM THE GRAND ON CENTRAL: “There is so much good going on in our community, and I want to share all this good with you every Monday here on WLAF in hopes that you will start your week in a grand way making each week a Grand Week,” said Olivia Lobertini, owner of The Grand on Central.
