Saylor Hutcheson, Carley Kitts, and Lacey Pemberton were named all-tournament

PENSACOLA, FL (WLAF)- Last week, the Campbell County Lady Cougars traveled to Pensacola, Florida, to take part in the Innisfree Hotels Beach Basketball Classic for the second straight year. The Orange-and-Blue played Friday, Saturday, and yesterday and now sport a 12 & 2 record.

Up first on Friday were the 7-1 Barren County Trojanettes of Glasgow, Kentucky. It was a rough, physical, scrappy game one in which the Lady Cougars had the advantage. Campbell outmatched Barren County in game one by a score of 48-41.

Lacey Pemberton dominated the post, leading the scoring column with 18 points. Carley Kitts finished behind her with 10 points. Saylor Hutcheson totaled eight points. Bella Lester scored seven points, and Jayden Kitts rounded out the scoring column with five points.

Campbell’s first game was Friday against Barron County. Left to right Carley Kitts, Preslee Chapman and Destiny Rutherford ready for the inbound pass.

In game two on Saturday, Campbell played another team from Kentucky, the Metcalfe County Lady Hornets of Edmonton. Metcalfe also had an impressive record, 8-1.

Campbell’s physicality was too much for the Lady Hornets to handle. Campbell, despite a rough day shooting the ball, still defeated Metcalfe County 54-36.

Saylor Hutcheson was tops in the scorebook with 11 points. Jayden Kitts finished with 10 points in game two. Carley Kitts totaled nine points. Lacey Pemberton scored 8 points, along with 8 rebounds. Preslee Chapman and Bella Lester both contributed 7 points, and Reagan Davis ended with two points.

The game three matchup for the Orange-and-Blue was against a Texas powerhouse. The Winnsboro Lady Raiders, 21 and 3 on the season and having won their state championship in 2022, stood in the way of a perfect 3 and 0 beach trip for Campbell.

The first half was all Winnsboro, especially the second quarter. Winnsboro led Campbell 35-11 at halftime. The second half would be all about how the Lady Cougars would respond, and they did just that.

Campbell’s stifling defense came into true form in the second half. Plus, shots started to fall for the Lady Cougars. However, Campbell fell just short. When the horn sounded, Winnsboro held on to grab a 53-43 victory.

Bella Lester led scoring in game three with 15 points. Carley Kitts contributed a solid nine points. Lacey Pemberton finished with five. Jayden Kitts and Saylor Hutcheson chipped in with four points a piece, and Preslee Chapman and Reagan Davis totaled three points a piece.

After a fun week at the beach, Campbell now gets ready for the grind of district games. However, Clinton, a non-district opponent, is up next on the schedule. The Lady Dragons and Dragons come to Brown Gym Friday night. Lady Cougars tip off at 6pm and the Cougars are back in action at 7:30.
