When the WLAF cameras came into the room, the very down to earth, personable Joey Aguilar lit up.

LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF)- The buzz around La Follette was all Joey Aguilar on Friday when the Tennessee Vols quarterback visited Vol fans.

A morning stop at Gray Insurance began the buzz followed by an afternoon stop at Peoples Bank of the South ahead of a round of golf.

“Coach Josh Heupel called me personally minutes after I entered the portal back in the winter, and I am excited to be here,” said Aguilar.

Aguilar was being recruited by Caryville native Jamey Chadwell and was on his way to Coastal Carolina. “Then Coach Chadwell and his staff headed off to Liberty, and Appalachian State swooped in, brought me on campus, and I signed,” said Joey.

Agular left the Mountaineers after two seasons and signed with UCLA. After the Bruins decided to take former Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava, Joey jumped in the portal. “I call it sort of a vacation, because I was back at home in California for a while,” said Aguilar.

Joey Aguilar really caught Zeke Snodderly off guard when he told him “no” he would not autograph his football. Zeke went speechless, and Aguilar and the whole room erupted in laughter. Zeke did get his autograph.

“I got into the portal about 7am the day after UCLA decided on Nico, and it takes about two hours for everything to process. By 9am, I was on the phone with Coach Heupel,” said Aguilar.

Aguilar is excited to play in the Tennessee offense. “Joey, I get paid for shooting fireworks when the Vols score a touchdown. So I’m hoping you’ll help me out,” said Lansden Hill of Pyro Shows.

Traveling to see their son play is nothing new to the Aguilar family. “They made all of my home and away games at Appalachian State. Dad said they’d spent about $35,000 for travel and hotels,” said Joey.

Justin Letner with Collectables and More is Aguilar’s host. Letner’s shop at Maryville is where Aguilar made his first public appearance as a Tennessee Vol earlier this month.

The buzz Number 6 made today in La Follette will last a lifetime for the Vol fans who had a chance to meet him. “I like him. He’s gonna do great,” said Larry Byrge of Byrge Screen Printing. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED-07/18/2025-6AM)

  1. Finally a quarterback who wants to play vol football. He’s surrounded by talent and never had a defence. I believe he’ll blow away the SEC and the nation. Nico was a deer in headlights. Go vols gbo
