Tennessee requires all public schools to provide annual, age-appropriate firearm safety instruction

JACKSBORO, TN (SPECIAL TO WLAF)- Campbell County Schools observes “Firearm Safety Week” all this week, Monday, November 17 through Friday, November 21.

Campbell County Schools is observing Firearm Safety Week November 17-21 for all students in grades K-12. This initiative follows Tennessee Code §49-6-1016, a new state law requiring all public schools to provide annual, age-appropriate firearm safety instruction.

The lessons are taught by the Campbell County Sheriff’s Department Firearm Safety Team and School Resource Officers. There is State Approved Curriculum provided by the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency (TWRA).

Instruction includes:

  • Safe storage of firearms
  • School safety related to firearms
  • What to do if a firearm is found (never touch, tell an adult)  

All lessons are age-appropriate, viewpoint-neutral, and do not involve live firearms or ammunition. This program aims to educate students on firearm awareness and safety, helping to keep our schools and community safe.  (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED-11/18/2025-6AM)
