WILLIAMSBURG, KY (WLAF)- There was a field trip for eighth graders from Elk Valley, Jellico, White Oak and Wynn Schools back on October 1. The youngsters ventured to the University of the Cumberlands as part of the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Middle School career exploration program. Students toured the college campus and received information about opportunities that are available on campus for college students.

Elk Valley STEM School teacher Mary Beth Seiber and Nurse Haley Baird were along on the trip, while White Oak teacher Joni Maiden chaperoned students from her school. Teachers from Wynn included Tammy Webb and Jessica Moore, while Jellico teacher Gage Hyslop and Jellico CTE Coach Lisa Bolton attended with Jellico students.

According to Jellico High School CTE Coach Lisa Bolton, it was a great opportunity for kids in the area to see a high-quality college located right across the state line in Williamsburg, Kentucky.

“They learned what sports are available to play or watch, and what clubs are available to join and participate in. They also were told how to secure their place at the college by maintaining at least a 2.5 GPA, which can result in them attending for $4,000 per year, which could be less with grants. They were able to enjoy lunch in the college cafeteria, and all agreed it was delicious! Especially all you can eat ice cream! Several may have decided based on lunch alone that it’s definitely a great college choice to consider!” Bolton said, adding that the “University of the Cumberlands is such an asset to our area—it should be on every student and parent’s radar of college choices!” (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED-10/31/2025-6AM-PHOTOS COURTESY OF LISA BOLTON
