LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – Classic summer weather of heat, humidity and storms is on tap today as temps take off to the mid-90s pushing the feels-like temperature to a hundred and two-degrees

There is a marginal risk of late afternoon and evening severe storms Wednesday, the isolated to scattered variety. Should strong storms develop, damaging wind and heavy rainfall will be the main threats primarily during a time frame of 5pm through 10pm.

Dangerous heat continues today, and you must practice heat safety wherever you are, because heat related deaths are preventable. Stay hydrated, take breaks in air conditioned areas or the shade, and never leave people or pets in locked vehicles.

With dangerously hot temperatures in place, here are tips to help you stay safe in the heat.

1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

2. Dress Appropriately: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and maybe a wide-brimmed hat if you’re going to be outside.

3. Use Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin from UV rays.

4. Take Breaks: If you’re working or exercising outdoors, take frequent breaks in the shade or a cool area.

5. Never Leave Anything with a Pulse inside an Unattended Car: Temperatures inside a car can quickly become dangerously high, even if it doesn’t seem that hot outside.

6. Know the Signs of Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke: Symptoms include dizziness, rapid heartbeat, nausea, confusion, and hot, dry skin. If you or someone else shows these signs, seek medical attention immediately.

7. Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Keep an eye on elderly relatives and neighbors, young children, and those with chronic illnesses as they are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.

8. Stay Informed: Last but not least, keep connected to your local information source such as FM 100.9 WLAF and 1450wlaf.com for the latest weather forecast and news. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED 06/26/2024-6AM)
