The 5am Thursday accident caused phone lines to fall and block Pinecrest Road

David Owens was allegedly behind the wheel of this car when it wrecked.

JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF)- Very early Thursday morning, Caryville Police received the call of a possible intoxicated male behind the wheel of a Ford Taurus. The caller told the operator at Central Dispatch the Ford had nearly struck other vehicles in the Waffle House parking lot. Caryville Officers were unable to locate the Taurus.

Later, at 5am, the report of a wreck on Pinecrest Road where a car struck a telephone pole came into dispatch. The caller alleged the driver was attempting to leave the scene.

Campbell Sheriff’s Corporal Jesse Ferguson arrived at the scene of the wreck in the 2100 block of Pinecrest Road not far from the first Pine Hollow Road turn off. The corporal found a disabled Ford Taurus on the right side of the road, and it had struck a telephone pole causing phone lines to fall and block the road, according to the report from the sheriff’s office.

The driver was not at the scene prompting Ferguson to check the surrounding area soon locating the driver, identified as David Owens. Owens had walked down the road from the crash site, based on the report.

Owens stated he had recently been discharged from the hospital and stopped by the Waffle House to get food, and that he was walking home after nobody would take him home after he wrecked, according to the sheriff’s report. He further stated he wrecked because a deer crossed the road.

Owens consented to to perform a field sobriety test on which he performed poorly, based on the report.

Sergeant John Minor assisted with the crash investigation and conducted an inventory of the sedan prior to it being recovered and towed. During the inventory, the sergeant allegedly located an empty Suboxone wrapper inside the car.

Owens was placed under arrest and transported to the Campbell County Jail. At the jail, Owens consented to a blood test.

Owens, 54, of 224 Yoakum Hollow Road, Jacksboro, was charged with DUI and leaving the scene of an accident. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED-10/31/2025-6AM)
