“We have not been in school since Christmas Break…the bus routes have been checked daily. What you see outside on the main roads looks clear, but when we go to our secondary roads, they are completely covered, which is why students will once again be out of school (Wednesday),” Fields said. She said principals and supervisors had been going in and checking everything was working in school buildings and that there were no leaks or weather-related problems.

She gave a brief update on the CCHS field house renovation, saying “demolition was underway.”

“The maintenance department and central office staff are working on the CCHS field house area. We have had to put up mesh fence, signage and move everyone out of the building, currently, demolition is underway. The project is slightly behind schedule, the cost of the project has increased due to the structural instability and scope of the work to renovate and that’s why the signage and everything has been put up,” Fields said.

She reported that the Jacksboro Elementary School renovation was “moving along as planned to be finished as projected.”

The Jellico Elementary School gym floor is completed and “they’re already having gym classes in it.”

The Jellico High School construction welding renovation is moving along as planned and should finish as projected.

Lockers at Jacksboro Middle were put out to bid, none were received, and it will be put out to bid again.

“We are in the process of bidding out lights and sound system for Jellico High School auditorium,” Fields said.

She reported the painting was complete at LaFollette Middle School and should be finished at Wynn this weekend and that bleachers at CCHS have been repaired.

“Central office supervisors and I are working on our district plan and our leadership team. We are working on having the district plan to be submitted to the state by March 3rd,” Fields said.

The school system’s special education teachers have been trained on “new special education procedures and principals will be trained on January 15th.”

She also announced that LaFollette Middle School would be starting an “intramural flag football team under the NFL umbrella providing new unique opportunities for the students.”

School board data meetings are Feb 4th and 6th at 5 pm in the central office meeting room. Both Director Fields and BOE Chair Jeffrey Miller encouraged attendance. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED-01/15/2025-6AM)
