ATV driver would not comply to lights and sirens

NEWCOMB, TN (WLAF)- At 2:30 on Saturday morning, Campbell Sheriff’s Deputy Jason Shears was radaring traffic from his parked cruiser at E’s Market & Deli on Highway 297, Newcomb Pike. The deputy’s radar alerted as an ATV passed heading east along the straightaway at 72 miles per hour.

Deputy Shears immediately began attempting a traffic stop using lights and sirens though the driver of the ATV did not comply. The deputy states that the ATV maintained a speed of 55 MPH during the pursuit that turned onto Creekmore-Housley Drive, then onto Wooldridge Pike. While on Wooldridge Pike, the ATV ran between 45 and 60 MPH as it veered left of the double-yellow lines and going around curves on the wrong side of the road, according to the report from the sheriff’s office.

As the pursuit continued, the ATV returned to the intersection of Wooldridge and Newcomb Pikes turning west onto Newcomb Pike. From there, the ATV turned onto Whistle Creek Road and at a low rate of speed onto Booger Hollow Road which dead ends at Fox Cemetery. While in the cemetery, the ATV entered a wooded area on an offroad trail, and that’s as far as Deputy Shears could go in his cruiser because of the trail being so narrow.

Shears waited for back up from Sergeant Jordan Huskey, and as he did, he could hear the engine of the ATV rev up and tires spinning as if the ATV was stuck. Both officers observed a gray pick-up truck turn onto Whistle Creek Road later confirming the driver of the ATV had left the scene.

The officers walked into the wooded area on the trail and located the ATV abandoned some 300 yards from the trail entrance. After a brief search for the driver or possible passenger, Deputy Shears requested information by way of the ATV’s VIN number. Central Dispatch confirmed the ATV belonged to Kyle Douglas of Jellico.

Shears and Huskey went to the Douglas residence at 216 West Davis Lane and allegedly noticed wet, muddy clothes and shoes on the porch of the home. The officers soon made contact with Douglas.

Douglas was read his Miranda rights and soon allegedly confessed that he was the driver of the ATV, based on the sheriff’s office report. Douglas went on to state that he had no good reason to evade. He added that he thought the transmission on the ATV failed so he fled on foot and called a friend to come pick him up.

Kyle Wade Douglas, 24, of 216 West Davis Lane-Jellico, was arrested and charged with speeding, evading arrest by motor vehicle, use of an off-road vehicle on a highway and reckless driving. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED-12/30/2025-6AM)
