Appointment of a vice mayor/beer board chairman is up for a vote next week

LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF)- Yesterday afternoon Mayor Cliff Jennings attended his last workshop as mayor. The upcoming Christmas Holiday topped the agenda. The city will host a lighting of the Christmas Tree on Dec. 3 at 6:30 p.m., the annual Christmas parade will be Dec. 7 at 6 p.m. and finally the employee Christmas dinner will be on Dec. 17 at 6:30 p.m.

Several items are on the agenda for next Tuesday’s monthly meeting beginning with annual beer renewals for 2025. Also to be on the agenda are the acceptance of a bid for the LPRF Grant for Parks and Recreation Liberty Park improvement, and two bids were received for the project, Rogers Group bid $186,032 and Skilled Services bid $230,600. Appointment of the vice mayor/beer board chairman is set for the agenda. City Attorney Reid Troutman requested that the mayor and council set a meeting to discuss package stores in LaFollette. City Administrator Stan Foust said he would work with Troutman and the council to establish a meeting day and time. Jene Hopkins was present at the workshop to discuss the Campbell County Girl Scouts Service Project that earned them a silver award. The sixth and eighth grade girls in the troop did a project creating a proposal for crosswalks and lights at LaFollette Middle School, Campbell County High School and LaFollette Middle School. Hopkins reported that State Representative Dennis Powers told her he could get the funding for the project. The troop needs the city’s approval before it can move forward with the project.

Resolution 2024-21 authorizing the City of LaFollette to participate in the PEP Risk Management Pool (Cyber Security) Loss Control Matching Grant Program is expected to be on next week’s agenda.

Ordinance 2024-10 amending the zoning ordinance pertaining to swimming pools adds definitions of a pool alarm and a swimming pool. Ordinance 2024-11 amending the zoning ordinance to state no building shall be erected on a lot which does not abut at least to one public street, unless an easement at least 30 feet in width to a street is provided. For any dwelling abutting a public or private street, an entrance to the dwelling must face the street.

As the workshop drew to a close outgoing Mayor Cliff Jennings suggested that the city may want to go in a different direction for city judge. The item will be on the agenda for next Tuesday’s meeting. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED-11/26/2024-6AM)
