City planning commission meets

LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF)- LaFollette Regional Planning Commission held its monthly meeting Thursday evening at City Hall.

The only thing on the agenda was a proposal for changes to the residential swimming pool ordinance 11-605.

Codes Officer Stuart Hurwitz brought attention to the differences in the codes and definitions in the city ordinances and state ordinances regarding swimming pools.

The city had a swimming pool defined as water more than 18 inches deep and the state defines it as water over 36 inches deep. It was voted to change the definition of the city to match the state definition of water over 36 inches.

A barrier of at least 4 feet is required around water that is 36 inches deep.

A pool alarm is required, that is state law. A pool alarm is a device that sounds off if something more than 15 pounds enters the water.

This is for all pools, new and existing. There will be a six month period for existing pools to become compliant. This will be for areas zoned R1 and R2.

Codes Officer Hurwitz will be available to answer questions. Ideas of scheduled meetings for citizens to attend and get all the information needed was talked about or doing webinars for citizens to access online were discussed briefly.

Also, a building permit is required to erect a structure, and a pool is considered to be a structure. Pools are not to be placed in front or side spaces unless it has been approved by the board of zoning appeals. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED- 07/29/2024-6AM)

  1. According to Pool store, an alarm is not what one needs. They say it’s too late by the time the alarm goes off!!!!!

  2. According to Pool stores,an alarm goes off too late to be a benefit. No one should swim alone!!!
