In the early morning hours of Thursday, October 23rd, 2025, Cebert R. Mitchell was reunited with the love of his life in a joyous heavenly reunion. Cebert and Marguerite Franks Mitchell are together again after a 4 year separation.
Cebert, “Mitch” to his co-workers, was born August 10th, 1933, in the backwoods of West Virginia to Walter and Mamie Mitchell.
From a young age Cebert was curious about nearly everything, a trait that never left him. With only a couple of years of Bible College and the realization he would never be a salesman, Cebert began a career at Duke University where he was asked to assemble an early version of a simple computer. Thus began a career in electronics that served him well over the years. From Duke University he moved on to work at Cape Canaveral, Fl. during the early days of the space program before eventually ending up in the Instrument and Controls division at Oak Ridge National Laboratories.
However, his greatest accomplishment was convincing his future wife, Marguerite Franks, to marry him while they were both students at Baptist Bible College in Springfield, MO. He loved her dearly. His children would remember he greeted her with a hug and a kiss everyday when he returned from work. Their union commitment to his family has had the most lasting impact with his three children Kyle, Sharyn and Cindy continuing that very commitment within their own families.
Throughout his life he cared deeply for his family; his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He enjoyed visiting with them and bragging on them. In the latter years, when his declining mobility reduced his visits, he would always ask about them during phone calls. His love of travel and the outdoors was a big part of his influence on his family. The family traveled extensively, always in a tent or camper, a love that has been passed on to all three of his children. He always made sure we were settled into a National Park campground early enough to attend the ranger talk. He led his family on many fall Sunday afternoon hikes to fire towers in East TN. He tried to provide his grandchildren with some of those same experiences, traveling with them to different locations. As a team, Cebert and Marguerite would sponsor “Camp Mitchell” where the grandchildren experienced the joys of camping and playing in the streams of the Smokies.
However, his greatest influence was one of an eternal nature. He loved the Lord his God and took seriously God’s desire for us to serve others and his church. He lived out Joshua 24:15, “But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord”. And his household has. Throughout his life he actively served his church as well as caring for others. There have been many friends whose air conditioners, washing machines, and cars were made operable by his skills. He served his family, church and friends well.
Psalms 116:15 states “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints”.
Matthew 25:23 “Well done Cebert Mitchell, my good and faithful servant”.
Cebert was preceded in death by his wife Marguerite Franks Mitchell, his parents Walter and Mamie Mitchell, his brother Millard Mitchell and granddaughter Jessica Fox.
Cebert is survived by his children, son, Kyle Mitchell and his wife Kathi, daughters, Sharyn Vincent and her husband Greg, and Cindy Fox and her husband Alan. His surviving grandchildren are granddaughters, Jenifer Vincent and Michelle McGouyrk and grandsons, Andrew and Kevin Mitchell, Ryan Vincent and Jeremy Fox. He was also the proud great grandfather of 11 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Eileena Rollyson, Naomi Phalen, and Vergie Mitchell.
The family would like to express our sincere gratitude to the staff at LaFollette Court for their tender love and care for our father.
A private graveside will be held at Oak Ridge Memorial Gardens on Saturday, November 1st, 2025. Walters Funeral of LaFollette is honored to be serving the family of Cebert R. Mitchell.
