POWELL, TN (WLAF) – The Cougars, coming off a tough 63-61 loss at Middlesboro, on Monday night, traveled to Powell to take on the Panthers at Jeff Hunter Gymnasium. Campbell entered 7 & 13 on the season and 1 & 3 in District 3 (4-A) play. The Panthers came into the contest 18 and 2 on the year and 3 & 2 in district play.
Much like the Lady Cougars’ game, it took more than two minutes for Campbell to get points. Finally, Gavin Cox hit a free throw to put the Cougars on the scoreboard. The Cougars stuck with the Panthers in the first quarter, with Powell narrowly leading Campbell 11-6 at the end of the frame.
Powell increased their lead to double digits in the 2nd quarter, despite Luke Browning and Jake Hatmaker having some replay-worthy blocks. Tyler Kitts drilled a deep three near the end of the second quarter to cut Powell’s lead to 24-16 before Powell knocked down back-to-back AND1’s to increase the lead back to double digits. At halftime, Campbell trailed Powell 30-18.
Luke Browning drained his first three of the night to cut the lead down to 10 to start the third. Then following a steal from Logan Day, Browning sunk another one from the exact same spot to slash the lead down to seven, 31-24. Powell got the lead up to ten again with under a minute to go in the quarter. Gavin Cox drove to the lane and was fouled. The Powell Panther who committed the foul was not too pleased and slammed the ball down, resulting in a technical being assessed to him. Gavin went to the free throw line, where he hit 2 of 3 free throws, to diminish the lead to 40-32 at the end of the third.
Campbell’s full court press made it difficult for the Panthers in the final minutes. Unfortunately, the Cougars fell short. Powell hung on to the lead, 58-51. The Orange-and-Blue fall to 7 and 14 on the season and 1 and 4 in district play. As for Powell, they advance to 19 and 2 (4 and 2 in district play).
Luke Browning, your Local Realtor Gage Dople Player of the Game, and Gavin Cox scored 18 points each. All of Browning’s points came in the second half. Jordan Day scored six points. Tyler Kitts contributed three points. Jake Hatmaker, Logan Day, and Dylan Ford all had two points.
