LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – After 32 years at the helm of the LaFollette Utility, General Manager Kenny Baird (above) announced his retirement during Tuesday’s LUB workshop.Â
Baird presented the board with his 60-day retirement notice, saying it was “the right time to do so.”
His wife Tammy retired last year after more than 30 years in the Campbell County School System. Baird said he had contemplated retiring when she did but decided to wait until this time “to be sure” he was “ready for such a move.”
During the workshop, board members went over the plan of what needs done to keep things moving forward until a replacement General Manager can be hired. Several items were added to the agenda as a result of this.
During the meeting, the board formerly accepted Baird’s retirement notice.Â

It was also approved upon Baird’s recommendation for Regina Kennedy to be appointed as Interim General Manager. Also approved was for Kennedy to get a 10 percent raise in pay to compensate for additional duties.
She was also appointed executive secretary of the board to assist in the search committee for a new general manager.
“She is a certified Human Resources Specialist and is well qualified for these duties,” Baird said.
Kennedy has served the utility for over 35 years herself.
She spoke during the meeting, saying it had “been an honor working with Kenny.â€
“He has taught me so much over the years. Thank you for your confidence in me. I will do my very best,” Kennedy said.
Baird told the board he had complete confidence in her abilities.
Baird also provided contact information to the board for the Tennessee Valley Public Power Association (TPPA). According to Baird, there is a function within their organization that will help with a search for a new GM.
Also approved Tuesday evening was the forming of an executive search committee for the hiring of a new GM, which will be chaired by Jay Willoughby. It was also approved to retain an outside executive search firm to assist in finding a GM replacement.
Baird said he wanted to say thank you to the current board and past utility boards for their support over the years.
He expressed thanks to the board for understanding his unexpected retirement announcement as well.
“It’s just time to go. I’ve had a lot of good board members. It’s been a great experience. I kind of grew up in the job,” Baird said. He was 29 when he started the position.
“Not many utility managers stay at the same utility for nearly 32 years like I have. I will miss the many friends and colleagues that I have made over the years, but I really look forward to spending the rest of my time with Tammy and our family ” Baird said. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 05/29/2024-6AM)
