CAMPBELL COUNTY, TN. (WLAF)- Would you like to make a difference in the life of a shelter dog? The Campbell County Animal Center has a way people can make a difference. The center started the Homeward Bound Project to increase the enrichment of shelter dogs. The volunteers provide valuable one on one time, along with socializing of the dogs.
The staff bases the choice of dogs on how long they have been in the shelter and a dog’s stress level. Some dogs adjust better to life in the shelter than others. Changes can be made in the choice of dog. They want everyone to be happy.
The volunteer can bring treats, take “their dog†out for ice cream, or walk in the parks. But they don’t have to leave the shelter property if they are more comfortable staying close.
They ask volunteer to share photos of their dog and share insights with the staff. In turn, they can use that information to help get dogs adopted.
The volunteers do get attached to the dogs, and that is ok. These dogs can feel that someone loves them and cares for them. Unfortunately, the staff struggles sometimes and can’t devote the time that the volunteers provide. The Homeward Bound Project fills this gap.
It’s easy to get involved. Send the shelter a Facebook message, schedule an appointment, fill out a volunteer application, and they will assign you a dog.
