Local Sleep in Heavenly Peace well represented at recent record setting single-day bed build

MOORESVILLE, NC (WLAF) – It was quite the day last week when more than one-thousand builders gave of their time and worked in shifts over a 10-hour day to build 1,050 beds for multiple chapters of Sleep in Heavenly Peace. SHP will distribute those beds to children who don’t have a bed, and that includes children right here in Campbell County.

Bill Thompson (above), president of the local chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace, along with Ron Poore, Darrell Shepherd and Ron Janzer made the four hour trek last Thursday to the Lowe’s corporate office campus north of Charlotte. “Lowe’s is SHP’s biggest national sponsor and hosted the event with eyes set on building a thousand beds,” said Thompson.

“We set up in this parking garage near the corporate office, and Lowe’s provided all the materials and tools,” said Thompson. Three 18 wheelers were loaded with wood rolled up along with a trailer load of pallets, according to Thompson.

About a hundred Sleep in Heavenly builders came from around the country, as far away as Oregon. On top of that were all those hundreds of Lowes employees.

The local chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace rented a box truck to bring 100 beds back to Campbell County.

Beds from this record build will go to children in South and North Carolina, Georgia, Virginia and Tennessee. “One hundred of those beds will go to youngsters right here in Campbell County,” said Thompson.

Those building beds worked in four shifts of two to two and a half hours to set the record. It’s all a part of the Lowe’s Foundation.

Thompson shares his slogan and daily challenge of “no kid sleeps on the floor in our town.” (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 05/22/2024-6AM)
