LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – Cold wind chills below zero are here this morning and will result in possible hypothermia if outdoors for prolonged periods. Temps are hovering around zero with wind chills well below zero prompting a WIND CHILL ADVISORY until noon. The day will be sunny with a high of 29 ahead of a low of 11 Wednesday night.
Refreezing of untreated roads and surfaces is a major challenge this morning and will be again tonight as temperatures plummet to near zero. Areas of black ice are a travel hazard, so motorists are urged to slow down and use caution.
What’s next after temps climb above freezing Thursday for the first time since Sunday evening?
Another round of snow and wintry mix is expected Thursday night and Friday. Minor snow accumulations are probable across the highest areas of Campbell County, the east Tennessee mountains and southwest Virginia. There is lower confidence in the potential for some light freezing rain in portions of the area Thursday night as well, generally a few hundredths of an inch.
Very cold temperatures are expected Friday night and through the weekend with lows in the single digits and below zero wind chills.
Expect above average highs of 40s by Monday and then near 50 on Tuesday. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 01/17/2024-6AM)
