CAMPBELL COUNTY, TN (SPECIAL TO WLAF)-
Statement from the Campbell County Sanitation Department
Earlier today, the Campbell County Sanitation Department responded to a fire at the county’s transfer station facility. The fire was quickly identified by on-site personnel, and emergency services were immediately notified. Thanks to the prompt response from local fire crews and staff, the situation was contained and brought under control.
There were no reported injuries, and no damage to buildings or equipment as a result of the incident.
At this time, the exact cause of the fire remains unknown. However, preliminary indications suggest it may have been the result of unauthorized or improper materials being disposed of at the transfer station.
The safety of our employees, emergency responders, and the public remains our highest priority. We are currently assessing the situation and will continue to work with local authorities to determine the cause.
We would like to take this opportunity to remind all residents and haulers that certain materials are strictly prohibited from being disposed of at the transfer station due to safety risks. These items include, but are not limited to:
- Flammable liquids (such as gasoline, kerosene, or solvents)
- Propane tanks and pressurized cylinders
- Batteries (especially lithium-ion batteries)
- Chemicals, including household hazardous waste
- Paints, stains, and automotive fluids
- Explosives or ammunition
- Medical waste
- Electronic waste containing hazardous components
Improper disposal of these materials can pose serious risks, including fires, environmental harm, and injury to personnel.
We urge all residents to follow proper disposal guidelines and utilize designated hazardous waste collection services where available. If you are unsure whether an item is acceptable, please contact the Campbell County Sanitation Department for guidance before disposal.
We appreciate the cooperation of our community in helping keep our facilities safe.
