Suzanne Poplin Waldrep, of LaFollette, born February 26, 1960, in Greensboro, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2026. She lived a life marked by joy, energy, and a genuine love for others.
She grew up in Raleigh, where her vibrant personality and zest for life were evident from an early age. As a young girl, Suzanne was an active member of Forest Hill Baptist Church, singing in the youth choir and forming a foundation of faith that stayed with her throughout her life. Suzanne was fun-loving, outgoing, and truly lived life to its fullest. She attended the John Robert Powers Modeling School in Raleigh, embracing new experiences with confidence and enthusiasm. At Cardinal Gibbons High School, class of 1978, she was an active member of the basketball team, bringing energy, determination, and team spirit to the court. Her love of basketball continued at Elon College, where she played while pursuing her studies. Suzanne graduated in 1982 with a degree in business and accounting, setting the stage for a successful career as a Certified Public Accountant. She built a distinguished path in corporate tax, earning respect for her expertise, integrity, and dedication. Suzanne’s professional excellence was especially evident during her years with BNSF Railway in Fort Worth, Texas. As a member of the tax department, she played a key role in navigating complex tax audits and was recognized multiple times for her outstanding contributions. Her work not only saved the company significant resources but also earned her numerous internal awards and recognition, including being featured in a company publication—an honor that reflected both her expertise and the high regard in which she was held by her colleagues.
In 1988, Suzanne married the love of her life, Jason Waldrep, in Texas. Together, they built a life grounded in love, partnership, and family. They welcomed their son, Johnny Hugh Waldrep of Texas, who brought Suzanne immense pride and joy. Later in life, Suzanne and Jason retired to their dream home in LaFollette, Tennessee, on the shores of Norris Lake. There, she found peace in the beauty around her—watching sunrises over the water, spotting deer in the quiet mornings, and embracing the life she had built. True to her nature, Suzanne quickly made many dear friends in her Tennessee community, connecting with others easily and bringing warmth and laughter wherever she went.
Suzanne lived life with energy and curiosity. She was an avid runner, completing half marathons, and enjoyed yoga and strength training. She found joy in creativity through coloring, in knowledge through reading, and in connection through travel with her sister and dear friends. She remained deeply connected with friends throughout the years, cherishing many lifelong friendships that were a constant source of joy and support in her life.
She was the beloved daughter of Johnny and Louise Poplin. She is survived by her loving sister, Jeannie Poplin Hutton, and her brother-in-law, Henry Hutton, of Raleigh, North Carolina. She is also lovingly remembered by her nephews, Matthew Taylor Hutton and his wife, Olivia Hutton, of Black Mountain, North Carolina, and Mitchell Davis Hutton of Charlotte, North Carolina, who brought her great joy. Above all, Suzanne was a devoted wife and mother, a loyal friend, and a kind and compassionate soul. She never met a stranger and had a special place in her heart for the underdog. Her laughter, warmth, and vibrant spirit left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Suzanne’s life was one of love, adventure, and connection. Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched, the family she cherished, and the countless memories she created.
