Mother and daughter’s physical altercation at home prompts visit from police

A Campbell County woman is free on her own recognizance after a Sunday night DUI charge.

SPEEDWELL, TN (WLAF)- Campbell County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a domestic disturbance at a home on Flatwoods Lane Sunday evening to find a victim at the residence and learn the other person involved had driven away.

Police allegedly heard a slap and two females yelling at each other on a video shared by the victim in the 7:34pm incident, unsure which female was slapped. The victim told deputies she and her mother, Natasha R. Smith, became involved in a physical altercation. The alleged Smith was intoxicated and almost struck her with her vehicle, according to the police report.

While at the home, deputies received a call that a Nissan Rogue had wrecked on Doaks Creek Road in front of Liberty Baptist Church. The scene is a few minutes from the scene of the disturbance, and based on the video deputies had just watched, it was suspected that Smith may be the person involved in the wreck.

Deputies arrived on scene and found a black Nissan Rougue approximately 30-feet off an embankment. Smith, who was wearing an orange shirt in the video, was spotted in front of the church in the same orange shirt.

As Deputy Austin Stone spoke with Smith, he could smell the odor of alcohol coming from Smith, based on the report from the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office. When the deputy asked Smith is she had had anything to drink, and she allegedly said “yes”, he then asked how much prompting Smith to allegedly say “quite a bit”.

Smith was asked if she would be willing to conduct a field sobriety test, and she allegedly said “no, why the hell would I do that?” Smith was asked again after being helped to her feet by Stone and an EMS technician, and this time, she agreed to the test, on which she performed poorly, according to the deputy’s report.

After the continuous inability to follow Stone’s instructions, the odor of alcohol coming from Smith, her difficulty to stay awake and the wreck, she was placed under arrest.

Smith, 51, of 145 Flatwoods Lane- Speedwell, was charged with DUI and domestic assault. Smith was released from the Campbell County Jail on Monday on her own recognizance and is due in court on April 2, according to jail records. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED-03/24/2026-6AM)
