KNOXVILLE, TN (WLAF)- An Addy Coleman put back broke the ice as Campbell went ahead 2-0 three minutes into Monday night’s District 3-AAAA 3rd place game at Halls. Karns soon scored, took the lead, built it out to a 10-point advantage and appeared to be on its way to an upset of the second seeded Lady Cougars. However, Campbell had other ideas, though it took an overtime to get those ideas to come about as the Lady Cougars won 57-53.

“We grew up tonight. It wasn’t a pretty game. But a win is a win,” said Campbell Head Coach Jason Kitts.

Karns was ahead at every juncture except for the one that mattered most, the 4th quarter. It was 9-4 after one, 23-17 at the half and 36-32 entering the 4th quarter. Karlie Allen’s deep right corner three with 1:11 to go in the game held up to force overtime at 45-45. Allen picked up in the overtime where she left off in the 4th with a right wing three. That Allen three gave Campbell its first lead since it was 2-0.

From a Campbell 48-45 edge, the overtime was back and forth; Karns 49-48, Campbell 50-49, Karns 52-50, Campbell 53-52 and then a 53-53 deadlock. An Allen free throw gave the Lady Cougars the lead for good at 54-53.

With 35-seconds to play in overtime, Karns next possession turned into a textbook trip for Campbell’s defense. It started with Kaylee Albright blocking a shot that was saved at the end line by Ellie Faulkner who tossed it back to Albright with 20 seconds left. Albright had a head of steam racing down floor dribbling to the bucket and launching a leaning right hand scoop shot on the left side of the glass that swished through making it a three point game.

A Taraji Abernathy steal at mid-court gave Campbell the ball back as seconds ticked away. Karns re-stole the ball and missed a wide open lay up. Allen snagged the rebound, cradled the ball and was fouled.

“Karlie Allen can put this baby to bed with point nine seconds to go,” said Josh Parker, Voice of the Cougars. Allen knocked down one of two free throws to seal the 57-53 overtime victory.

“We finished the game without Addy Coleman and Preslee Chapman. Addie fouled out, and Preslee was injured. The rest of the team really stepped up,” said Coach Kitts.

The win sends Campbell to Sexton Court on Friday facing the Farragut Lady Admirals in the opening round of the Region 2 Tournament. Farragut finished second to Bearden, 64-55, in its District 4 championship game on Monday night. Campbell is 14 & 10 while the Lady Admirals are 19-10. Tip time is 7pm.

Karlie Allen was tops on the night with 19 points, and Addy Coleman added 11 for a double-figure night. Reagan Davis scored eight as did Preslee Chapmen before she was shaken up and did not return to the game. Taraji Abernathy had five, Kaylee Albright chipped in four points and Ellie Faulkner scored two.
