JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF)- The Campbell County Board of Education met briefly on Tuesday evening, approving advertising for gym floor bids at Elk Valley STEM School and Jacksboro Elementary School.

Board of Education Chairman Jeffrey Miller started Tuesday’s meeting with a moment of silence in honor of “Coach John Faulkner” who recently passed away.

The board of education approved to request two bids. The first was for a Solar Model GSE to be declared as surplus to be sold to highest bidder. The other was to advertise for bids on the Jacksboro Elementary Gym floor and the Elk Valley Gym floor.

Interim Director of School’s Nancy Lay gave “some good news” that the Jacksboro Gym project was expected to be completed by May, which is a month earlier than was recently projected.

School Board member Brandon Johnson asked why the gym floor needed replaced at Elk Valley because this was “the first he had heard of it.”

Lay, who is the former principal at Elk Valley, said the gym floor at the school was bubbling and coming unglued.

“It’s bubbling, it’s not a wooden floor and the seams are coming apart. The glue is coming apart, it’s becoming a safety hazard,” Lay said.

She said she had been talking with district’s maintenance supervisor for several years about the floor.

“It’s like a heavy-duty linoleum floor and the seams are coming apart and it could possibly become a safety hazard,” Lay said.

Board Chairman Jeffrey Miller said he was at the school recently and that the whole seam was split down the middle and that there was no way around it, the school would have to have a gym floor. He also said with the Jacksboro projected to be done in May, the district would need to start getting bids because “everyone wants to put a gym floor down in summer, so we need to get on this,” Miller said.

It was approved unanimously to advertise for bids or the gym floors. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED-01/14/2026-6AM)
