Campbell bounces back with 63-20 win
By Clayton Carroll
JACKSBORO, TN – Friday night was homecoming night at John R. W. Brown Gymnasium as Campbell County welcomed the Carter Hornets from Strawberry Plains. The Orange-and-Blue were looking to bounce back after a disappointing 56-49 loss at Oliver Springs on Tuesday evening and did.
The contest began with a very special moment. Shakira Goins, the Lady Cougar senior who has been riddled with injuries her entire time on The Hill, started on Friday night. Goins, who tragically lost her father two weeks ago and is preparing to undergo knee surgery for the second time, was given the opportunity to score on the opening possession and put her name in the scorebook at CC.

After those two points which put Campbell in front, the Lady Cougars stayed in the lead. It was all gas, no brakes for the Orange-and-Blue, leading Carter at halftime 49-8. It was a half where the Lady Cougars only committed three turnovers and shot 65% from the field.
When the final horn sounded, the Lady Cougars won 63-20. Campbell coasted to a win in a game that lasted only 1 hour and 1 minute. The Orange-and-Blue are now 5 and 5 on the year.

Addy Coleman was the Orange-and-Blue’s top scorer, racking up 18 points. Preslee Chapman totaled 12 points. Kaylee Albright finished with eight points. Karlie Allen tallied six points. Taraji Abernathy ended up with five. Reagan David and Maggie Herrin both scored four points. Lily Lloyd and Shakira Goins scored two points a piece, and Alexa York rounded out the scoring column with one point.

“We came into practice on Thursday all business…and our girls came out and brought the energy early. We got a lot of sets in and practice of what we wanna do tonight,” said Head Coach Jason Kitts.
The Lady Cougars are off for quite a period of time. Since Campbell withdrew from the Nashville Christmas tournament, their next scheduled game is January 2nd at Loudon, a brief non-district game before the next eight games are District 3-AAAA contests.
“For the next three or four days we’re gonna heal up a little bit and focus on getting everyone healthy and worry about us. Because I think if we control what we do, not turn the ball over, and make some shots, we can compete with anybody,” continued Kitts.
