JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF)- On a near perfect fall day, family and friends of the late Bill Robinson gathered in the noon hour to recognize Robinson for his service and legacy by dedicating the park at Jacksboro in his name. “Everyone knows Bill,” said Roy Green. Green, an alderman with the Town of Jacksboro, opened the ceremony with comments and stories of Robinson.
Robinson fought in World War II, and his outfit was one of the first launched on D-Day. He served in the Army Air Force and was the second most decorated WW II soldier in Campbell County, according to VA records. He was awarded the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and medals for the American, European, and African campaigns.
However, back home in Campbell County is where Robinson made a lasting impact by serving for decades in government and as an educator. “He was always first in the county commission races. A fellow once bet me a hot dog that Bill would not finish first in a particular race. I won the bet but never got the hot dog,” said Green.

Green went on to say that Bill would help you and would never tell anyone about it. “He was a good friend, a good family man,” said Green.

“I’d like to thank everyone for coming; a special thanks to the mayor and council for honoring Dad in such a special way. He always treated others as yourself. I thank you for recognizing him for his service and his legacy,” said Jeanne Higdon, Robinson’s only daughter.

Robinson was recruited to become principal of the new Stony Fork School along with his wife Joyce and six other teachers, and they opened the newly built school in 1955. When Stony Fork closed fifty years later, he was invited back as the guest of honor and graduation speaker for the final high school class to graduate. He considered this to be one of the most beloved honors he ever received.
“I echo Jeanne’s remarks,” said John Robinson, a son.

In the late 1960s, Robinson was elected to his first public office. He was re-elected to the Campbell County Commission multiple times, ultimately serving for more than 20 years.

“We are so honored,” said David Robinson, a son.

“I thought a lot of Bill, I’ve told a lot of Bill Robinson stories over the years,” said Jacksboro Mayor Shayne Green.
“Bill did a lot for Campbell County. He was so smart. I’m proud to have known him and work for him,” said Campbell County Mayor Jack Lynch.

“This park will be here forever, and today we dedicate this park to him,” said Green. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED-11/17/2025-6AM-PHOTOS COURTESY OF WLAF’S CHARLIE HUTSON)
