More than $80,000, combined, in state grant money presented on Friday morning

JELLICO, TN (WLAF)- City, county and state leaders gathered at Jellico City Hall on Friday morning for a check presentation to the Jellico Fire Department and Jellico Rescue Squad. “Anytime we can get a grant to help the city is exciting,” said Jellico Mayor Sandy Terry.

“It’s a big step in safety for our firefighters. We’ve upgraded our equipment real well, like turnout gear,” said Jellico Fire Chief Keith Blair. The chief adds that his department does a little bit of everything. “In addition to fighting fire, we provide traffic control, search for missing persons within the city and assist with wrecks,” said Blair, a 20-plus year veteran with the JFD.

“We’re always glad to see Jellico be able to get these grants. These local grants that come out from the state are great, because all of our citizens get an even share of it, so to speak. Jellico gets one and maybe La Follette or another town may get one next time. It helps the people, and we’re for helping people,” said Campbell County Mayor Jack Lynch.
The Jellico Rescue Squad covers 250 square miles from the Claiborne County line to the Stinking Creek Exit of I-75, eight miles into Kentucky and a total of 30 miles of I-75, which is 60 miles when counting north and south lanes.

JRS now has an EMR unit (Emergency Medical Response). “We’re able to treat a patient until an ambulance arrives. This is big for the community plus those needing aid on I-75,” said JRS Captain Marty Bowlin.
“I’ve worn every hat here,” said Bowlin. He serves the Jellico Rescue Squad as its captain, in his fourth year, and as its chaplain. Bowlin leads the 30 member squad where he’s been a member for 34 years.
“These grant dollars have allowed us to upgrade a lot of our gear, like BAs, breathing apparatus,” said the captain.
“These state grants through the fire marshal’s office are very beneficial,” said State Representative Dennis Powers.

“Dennis Powers and I are glad to be able to help both of these agencies get grants. It will improve their ability to serve the people here by protecting lives and property,” said State Senator Ken Yager. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED-11/03/2025-6AM)
