City of LaFollette leaders meet in workshop session and will hold regular meeting on Tuesday

On Monday afternoon, the LaFollette City Council met and discussed several promotions in its workshop session.
Veterans H.R. Douglas and Ronnie Wright were in attendance to discuss a Veteran’s Memorial planned for Caryville. The pair told the council that they hoped to have all municipalities involved in the project. The memorial will have 48 ft x 12 ft American Flag on a 60 foot pole alongside seven service flags. The memorial will be located between the dialysis clinic and the Caryville Cares Playground. The pair was present to solicit donations for the memorial, and City Administrator Stan Foust stated that he would speak with Finance Administrator Terry Sweat and they would get back to them.
At the monthly meeting in September, Tuesday, the second at 5:30pm at City Hall, the council will vote on three promotions. The first promotion is Isiah Lawson with the police department to a full time sergeant effective Sept. 6. He has been with the city since 2013. Next will be the promotion of Brennan Dunlap to a full-time sanitation worker and finally the promotion of Brandon Berry to a full-time sanitation worker effective Sept. 6.
The public works department would like to purchase an asphalt hot box for patching. The cost of the box is $45,000. The council discussed potentially removing a grassy area on Depot Street.
The concrete in front of the fire and police department bays have started to deteriorate and needs to be replaced. The concrete is estimated to cost approximately $20,000, the demolition for the project according to Foust will be completed in house. Council will decide at the monthly meeting how it wants to proceed with the project.
The police department requested permission to apply for a Tennessee Law Enforcement hiring, training, and recruitment program cost sharing program. Currently the police department is fully staffed with 23 full-time employees and four part-time employees. The police department would like to promote Stephanie Lockwood to dispatch supervisor. Both items will be voted on at the next regular meeting.
Bethany Benjamin, Mount Cammerer District Executive, with the Great Smoky Mountain Council of Scouts was present to request an event permit for Rocket Launch at Liberty Park on Sat., Oct. 4. Foust requested permission from the council to apply for a Blue Cross Blue Shield Grant for $750,000. If awarded, the grant will be used for a new splash park. The council discussed advertising for a city attorney. Foust reported that Angie Carrier with the Municipal Technical Advisory Service (MTAS) had suggested the city look for an attorney with a background in municipal law.
The council will have purchases to vote on at the regular meeting. The first is bleachers for Liberty Park. Foust said they would have an exact cost by the meeting. The next item is a set of swings for Seargeant Park which will cost approximately $7,000.
The council will vote on Resolution 2025-16 amending the 2025-26 budget and Resolution 2025-17 authorizing the city to participate in the PEP Risk Management Pool (Property Conversation) Loss Control Matching Grant Program.
In final business of the meeting, Codes Enforcement Stuart Hurowitz spoke with the council about considering adopting the International Property Maintenance Code. He spoke with the council two months ago about adopting the code; however the item was tabled. After a brief discussion it was decided the council would meet with Hurowitz to discuss the code before moving forward. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED-08/28/2025-6AM)
