‘Note the new rate is coming from Nashville, and the county has no authority in that’- Rusty Orick

JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF) – County commissioners read the new certified tax rate into the meeting minutes at Monday’s commission meeting, officially adopting the new rate. The Certified tax rate is $1.2156 and dropped down from the previous rate of $2.0659.
Commission Chairman Johnny Bruce said that the finance department had asked the commission to approve the new certified tax rate as “calculated and submitted by the state division of property assessment and the Campbell County Property Assessor’s Office.â€
Commissioner Zach Marlow said he wanted to add an amendment to the motion saying that “from everything the county has been told by the state, the new tax rate will only generate the same amount of property tax revenue for Campbell County.â€
Commissioner Rusty Orick said he wanted it noted that the new certified tax rate “is coming from Nashville and the comptroller. The county has no authority in that,” Orick said. He also noted that the rate had not been “dabbled in or changed by the county commission†and was being passed directly on as it had been submitted by the state. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 07/16/2024-6AM)
Question: If the tax rate is handed down by the state and the county has NO authority in the rate, then why does the commission have to act on it? Sounds like a moot issue if the county has NO authority. NO authority, why bother?
Same amount of money generated????? Calling bs on this! I do not know a single person whose taxes went down. Everyone I know has theirs increase at least a hundred dollars. Multiplied by every piece of property in this county, that’s a substantial revenue increase.
