CARYVILLE, TN (WLAF) – At last month’s monthly meeting of the Caryville Board of Mayor and Aldermen, the board voted to increase the town’s garbage fee to $12 a month. On Monday night, Aldermen Josh Monday rescinded his motion from last month’s meeting to raise the garbage fee.

Alderman Monday explained that the town had not officially voted on an ordinance to lower the garbage fee in 2009, so it would need to vote on Ordinance 2024-07 making the $8 fee official before they could do anything else.  The ordinance to keep the fee at $8 was approved even though Aldermen Lloyd Lawson, Aldermen Vickie Heatherly and Aldermen Beth Lawson voted no on the motion.

Heatherly requested the board put an additional $200,000 into the town’s rainy day fund. She explained the board could put the money into a certificate of deposit at Builtwell Bank and earn 5.1% interest for seven months which equals approximately $2,000 a month in interest making the town $14,000 in seven months. The board voted to approve the motion.

Gwen Brown was in attendance to discuss a Department of Energy grant and her invoice. The grant, if awarded, would be for $3.8 million with the town matching five percent of the grant which equals around $154,000. The grant would be used for solar panels, EV chargers, weatherization programs and workforce training. Selection for the grant will be done in August with awards made between September and December. The board approved paying Brown’s invoice for $5,750 for her services on submitting the grant.

Ordinance 2024-08 approving the Emergency Rapid Entry System had a second reading.

The board approved Resolution 2024-01 applying for the Public Entity Partners Safety Grant. The safety grant is applied for yearly and is for $1,500.

In final business the board approved the purchase of a fire pick-up truck. The truck will be bought on a state contract for $47,840, the total cost of the truck with equipment is $59,813 plus striping. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 07/09/2024-6AM)
