The Underwoods, mother Jeanette and daughter Charlotte, demonstrate at weekend festival

MIDDLESBORO, KY (SPECIAL TO WLAF) – Mother-daughter duo Jeanette Underwood and Charlotte Underwood were traditional art demonstrators on Saturday at the Magic City Jazz and Ragtime Festival in Middlesboro, Kentucky. 

The Underwoods practice traditional Appalachian Agriculture methods such as heirloom seed saving, planting by the signs, foraging, preserving and more. Jeanette and Charlotte received a grant to document these important agriculture methods from the Tennessee Arts Commission in 2021 and to participate in the TAC’s Traditional Art Master and Apprentice Program. Additionally, this year, Charlotte received a grant from South Arts as an Emerging Traditional Artist as part of the “In These Mountains.” program to continue these important Appalachian agriculture practices.
