CAMPBELL COUNTY, TN. (WLAF)- Scott County native Leif Jeffers was elected to the position of president on Thurs., June 13, at the annual meeting of the elected District Public Defenders. He will serve as Conference President for one year.

Jeffers is the District Public Defender for the Eighth Judicial District, which is made up of Campbell, Claiborne, Fentress, Scott, and Union Counties. After graduation from Oneida High School and the University of Tennessee, Jeffers was a Special Agent Criminal Investigator with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. Following graduation from the University Of Tennessee College Of Law, Jeffers served the people of this district as an Assistant District Public Defender, Municipal Judge for the Town of Winfield, and Assistant District Attorney General. Jeffers was elected to his current position in 2014 and again in 2022.
“I am blessed beyond all my expectations to have this job,†Jeffers said. “Being elected President of the District Public Defenders Conference is a fantastic honor and a great responsibility. I am humbled and at the same time greatly encouraged to do an even better job for our clients. I am thankful to the voters of this district for trusting me with the representation of their family members and loved ones. I do not take the responsibilities of my job lightly. I will continue to work hard every day to make sure that anyone in this district accused of criminal activity has competent and effective legal representation.â€
