LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – LaFollette Police Officer Joseph Hicks was dispatched to 131 Nevada Avenue, Apt. 131, on April 13, around 5:30 pm, for the call of a suspicious person. The person was described as a white male, wearing a gray long sleeve shirt, blue jeans and carrying an orange backpack. It was alleged that the person was going through someone’s car.

When Officer Hicks arrived, he found a male walking in the parking lot who matched the description that had been given. The officer asked the individual their name, but he could not tell him. He could only scream and make incoherent sentences, according to a report from the LaFollette Police Department.

Officer Hicks was joined by LaFollette Police Officer Austin Tindell who asked the suspect again what his name was, and he then started reciting the alphabet incorrectly. The officers placed the suspect under arrest for public intoxication. After multiple attempts by all officers on scene to get a name, the suspect finally uttered Timothy Murphy. Dispatch was able to confirm his identity.

Sergeant Adam Southern spoke with the victim, who stated that when she came home, she allegedly saw Murphy sitting in the passenger seat of her boyfriend’s car appearing to be rummaging through the vehicle, with the trunk of her car also open. When the couple pulled into the parking lot, Murphy came towards her car and that he was pulling on her door handle trying to open her car door. After he wasn’t able to get in her car, he started walking up the hill where officers came into contact with Murphy.

Timothy Justin Murphy, 36, 184 Water Street, Caryville was charged with public intoxication and burglary.   (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 04/25/2024-6AM)
