UPDATE: Gary Wayne Burris, 47, Caryville, has been identified as the Campbell County inmate that died this morning, according to the TBI.

JACKSBORO, TN. (WLAF)- An inmate has died at the Campbell County Jail.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is currently at the jail conducting an investigation, according to Campbell County Sheriff Wayne Barton.

A preliminary briefing was given to Barton around 10:45am.

The 47-year-old male had been ill and taken to the front around 3am, he said.

“He was having some medical issues in the back,” Barton said. The nurse on duty administered some “anti-nausea medication,” Barton said.

At 4:26am, a called was placed to 911 when it was discovered the man “was not breathing,” according to the caller. Within three minutes an ambulance was on its way to the jail. The official time of death hasn’t been released yet, but it appears it was not long after the initial call went out.

“We don’t have any idea as to why he passed,” Barton said.

Drugs are not suspected to have been factor, according to the sheriff. “There was no indication (of narcotics,)” Barton said.

This is the same inmate that had Narcan administered to him on Wednesday morning.

The man had been arrested in the Caryville community early Wednesday morning. Once at the jail, he began showing signs of an overdose. He allegedly admitted he had ingested an unknown number of pills, Campbell County Sheriff’s Capt. Cody Chapman said.

He was later “medically cleared,” and was in jail on Wednesday, according to Chapman.

The inmate’s name has not been released pending notification of family.

An investigation is ongoing, according to Barton.

“They (the TBI) left here with a box full of stuff to take back to their office,” Barton said. This included jail logs, medical reports and paperwork from the previous incident, he said.
