JACKSBORO, TN (WLAF) – Teachers make a difference in their students’ lives every day. For many students, having a teacher who cares and goes that extra mile can be the difference in a successful education and graduation. We’ve all had that teacher who inspired us or helped in some way. That’s why WLAF and Eagle Tire Pros salute all of our hard-working educators with a weekly feature.

This week’s featured teacher is Shelby Smith. She teaches first grade at Jacksboro Elementary School and has been an educator for five years.

Smith graduated from Campbell County High School in 2015 and attended and graduated from Carson-Newman University in 2019.

When she’s not teaching, she spends her time as Production Leader for her church Hope and Stand and Production Director for FUGE Camps in the summer.

“I love to crochet! I’m currently working on a Taylor Swift blanket! I love anything Disney and hanging out with my nephew!” Smith said.

This is her fifth year of teaching. She spent the first four years teaching 1st grade at Belle Morris in Knox County.

According to Smith, it was her mom that was her inspiration for becoming a teacher.

“She spent 30 plus years in the classroom and is now in administration. I spent my afternoons in her classroom watching her. I knew I wanted to be a teacher because of how much she loved her kiddos,” Smith said.

Her favorite part of teaching is seeing the kids master new skills that they have been working so hard on learning.

“I love seeing their eyes light up when they are successful! I am so thankful for my first grade team as I have transitioned to teaching at Jacksboro. They have been so incredibly helpful,” Smith said.

And of her course, Shelby’s two dogs, Toby and Finn!
