LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – Chapman Hill Winery is coming up on its five-year anniversary and has some exciting new wines due out for spring and summer. Come for the award winning wines, stay for the view, and enjoy all the hospitality that Chapman Hill Winery has to offer.

The winery just released a Blueberry wine that is quickly selling out, and it has bottled a red blend that’s been very popular as well.

Mark your calendars for May 11 when live music events start back up at the winery. Chapman Hill Winery has an exciting music schedule already lined up, along with some surprise early summer wine releases, too.

Chapman Hill Winery is an award-winning winery, and last year was named by Choice Wine Magazine as one of the Top 10 wineries in the state of Tennessee. It was also named “Best Boutique Winery in Tennessee for 2023” by Lux Life Magazine.

Winery owners Chuck and Sherry Compton have “poured their hearts and souls into establishing Chapman Hill Winery and making it a place people love to visit.”

“To have that kind of recognition only five years in is something that we’re very proud of,” Chuck Compton said.

In 2016, Chuck and Sherry Compton moved to Tennessee to be closer to their youngest son who was attending UT. They were taken by the beauty of Campbell County in the Deerfield area and felt it would be perfect for a winery.

The groundbreaking for the winery building was held in January 2017 and the vineyard was planted by 32 volunteers on a “drizzly Good Friday in 2018.”

“Happily, of 400 vines that were planted, an amazing 399 made it into the ground and survived.”

In March 2018, Chapman Hill Winery finally had all permits and licenses in place to begin manufacturing wine – which drove the opening date to June 8, 2019.

According to co-owner Chuck Compton, wine making was never in his plans, but a friend of his got him a wine making kit as a gift.

Come out and enjoy a bottle of wine on the elevated deck or terraced patio and enjoy the view of the rolling hills and vines in the valley.

“I kind of felt obligated to do it, and it just ended up snowballing from there,” Chuck Compton said. This started him on more wine making at home with wine kits, smelling up the basement of their home with yeast and fermenting wine. Chuck quickly moved to working with fresh grapes and creating his own “recipes”.

“We would go to vineyards and wineries and try their wines and it seemed that our wine at home was just as good,” Chuck Compton said.

Chuck’s background is in Aerospace Engineering, but he had always been creative as well and loved art and drawing. About 15 years ago, he realized he could “blend science and art together in the making of wine.”

Wanting to make the best wine possible, Chuck enrolled in and completed the University of California- Davis Winemaker’s Certificate program.

“I got a lot of formal training that way. We’ve been very fortunate with the business; it grows every year thanks to our customers,” Chuck Compton said. He and his wife also said they had “been fortunate to make many friends in the area” as well through running the winery.

They enjoy being a part of the community and giving back by hosting community events that benefit the rural fire department, the Caryville Cares Playground, as well as the Campbell Culture Coalition, among others.

Below the covered deck, the 40 feet x 40 feet flagstone patio, finished in 2022, doubled the seating area for the winery.

With a stacked stone fireplace that takes up one entire side of the patio, the “cozy couches and comfy chairs make it a premier spot for enjoying the long summer concert series and the changing seasonal views of the Cumberland Mountain valleys.”
