LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – Sam Walton once said, “Outstanding leaders go out of their way to boost the self-esteem of their personnel. If people believe in themselves, it’s amazing what they can accomplish.”

On Thursday night, the Ball Farm Event Center in LaFollette hosted a wonderful crowd at the 16th Annual Boy Scouts of America Campbell County Good Scout Award Dinner, an event that has evolved into Campbell County’s premier recognition banquet.

This year’s Good Scout Award Dinner honored three Campbell Countians, Knud Salveson, and the Faulkners, John and Margaret Faulkner, for their exceptional service in the community.

For the 16th Annual Boy Scouts of America Campbell County Good Scout Award Dinner, a delicious meal was provided by Classy Threads and Catering.

The opening remarks were given by David Hickman, Eagle Scout Class of 2010.

The colors were presented by the T310 and T435 Joint Color Guard.

The invocation was delivered by Scout Emma Ayers, 2nd Class Scout.

Logan Hickman, Eagle Scout Class of 1972 and Dinner Chairman, gave his remarks.

Scout Rodney Calver, Tenderfoot Scout, shared his thoughts on the good of scouting.

Dr. Jerry Askew, Chairman, Mt. Cammerer District Friends of Scouting Campaign, shared his remarks about “Our Commitment.” Dr. Askew noted in his remarks, “scouting saves lives and changes lives.” He also notes that scouting saved his life.

The Faulkners, the fifth and sixth recipients of the Fretwell Outstanding Educator Award, started their educational careers back in the early 1960s and would go on to become successful in their field as educators for many years retiring in 2004 for a combined total of 78 years. While the Faulkners were great educators in their field, they are also members of the First Baptist Church of LaFollette where they are active in Samartian’s Purse and Celebrate Recovery.

A proclamation was then presented by Senator Ken Yager to John and Margaret Faulkner for their service to the students while a proclamation was presented by State Representative Dennis Powers to Lt. Col. Knud Salveson (retired) for his years of military service.

“A Scout Among Us” was presented by Chris Thacker, Brandon Johnson and Jesse Salveson who shared their thoughts about Lieutenant Colonel Knud Salveson (retired), recipient of the 2024 Good Scout Award.

Randy Atkins, Chairman, Mt. Cammerer District, GSMC, presented the Good Scout Award to Lieutenant Colonel Knud Salveson, US Army (retired), who becomes the first Eagle Scout Good Scout Award recipient. During his 20 plus years of military service, he would earn several military awards, and would go on to serve for 22 years as the Senior Army Instructor for the JROTC program at Campbell County High School.

During Knud’s award speech, he touched on an interesting tidbit about projects. He said, “If you are working on a project, people will help you.”

And to close out this year’s dinner, David Hickman offered the closing remarks.

For people who attended this event, it was a special night to remember as Campbell County came together to honor these people for their exceptional service in the community, and the money raised at this event supported Campbell County scouting in 2024. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 03/15/2024-6AM)
