‘It’s easy to deploy a hose, loading a hose isn’t’- Acting Lieutenant Jason Seiber, trainer

LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – Thursday afternoon served as training time for La Follette Firefighters on the “A” Shift, especially for a couple of newcomers.

Acting Lieutenant Jason Seiber demonstrates how to deploy a hose with a two hand grip.

Five firefighters listened and followed instruction from Acting Lieutenant Jason Seiber as they gathered at a fire engine in the city’s big parking lot beside the fire hall.

Firefighter Sam Finley follows the lieutenant’s example and delivers a text book hose deployment.

One of the first lessons was how to properly deploy a hose. “It’s easy to deploy a hose, but loading a hose is a different story. Some fellas disappear when it comes to that,” said Seiber as he laughed.

Firefighter Ryan Wagner (left) explains to Sam Finley how to connect the hose.

“We’re gonna be catching a hydrant (hooking up a supply line), and we’ll also flow some water,” said Seiber.

Lt. Seiber teaches Firefighter Finley that before he points the hose to the fire, he must first expel the air in the hose. “You don’t want to force air on a fire,” said the acting lieutenant.

Firefighter Sam Finley practiced giving the pump operator the signal to begin the water feed. “I just hold up my hand and make a circling motion,” said Seiber.

Firefighter Sam Finley positions the hose on his hip with a right hand grip and his left hand unleashing the water by pulling the lever. “If you hold the handle of the hose with your right hand, you’re going to tire very quickly. That’s why the way you’re holding the hose is the proper way,” said Acting Lieutenant Seiber.

“Regular training is the foundation of what we do. When responding to an emergency, there’s no time to stop and think. We need to be ready to act,” said “A” Shift Captain Johnny Seal. (WLAF NEWS PUBLISHED – 03/08/2024-8AM)
