LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – Valley View Elementary School will be “inaugurating and seeding” its Storybook Nature Trail on Thursday, March 7 at 1pm.

The project, according to organizers, is a “unique concept connecting reading and nature using trail markers, libraries, and books chosen by students.”

Ten outdoor signs will be placed along the nature walk that exists behind Valley View Elementary School. The signs will feature books that the students have selected. Several books were read aloud to each grade and the students then voted on the book they wanted to be represented on their nature trail.

According to Manuel Mesa, Executive Director of the Campbell Culture Coalition, the C3 will purchase five copies of each selected book. A copy will be available at the school library and one copy of each will be available at the four county libraries for the general publics’ easy access.

Troop 310 BSA Scouts helped out with Valley View’s Story Book Nature Tail by installing signs last week. The project is sponsored by the Campbell Culture Coalition and funded by the Campbell Enhancement Fund, East Tennessee Foundation and the Valley View Parent Teacher Organization, with manual labor provided by BSA Troop 310.

“Next week, (the first week of March) is ‘Read Across America’ week. This project connects our public libraries, and our children with the environmental world right outside their doors. It’s a natural three-way win,” Mesa.

Last week, members of BSA Troop 310 helped install the signs along the trail.

The signs that are erected along the nature trail feature a short passage and a picture from each book. Each sign will have a QR code that can be scanned for information.

The selected books are:

Pre-K – “Brown Bear, Brown Bear What do you See?” By Bill Martin Jr and Eric Carle

K – “The Leaf Thief” By Alice Hemming
